What is fine rib construction?
Fine rib knitting creates vertical channels in the fabric — alternating raised and recessed columns running the length of the sock. Those channels let the sock expand and contract along its width without the yarn itself having to stretch permanently.
A flat-knit sock has no such structure. When it stretches, the yarn stretches, and every stretch leaves it slightly larger than before. That's the mechanism behind a sock that fits on day one and sags by month three.
