The suit is the most considered outfit in a man’s wardrobe. The socks are usually the last thing he thinks about — and they show more than he expects. The single most important rule: match the trouser, not the shoe
The most common mistake men make with suit socks is matching them to their shoes. A black shoe with a navy suit and a navy sock looks intentional. A black shoe with a navy suit and a black sock creates a disconnected stripe of black at the ankle that draws the eye for the wrong reason.
The sock’s job is to extend the trouser visually — to create a clean, uninterrupted line from knee to floor. Match the sock to the trouser. If your suit is charcoal, wear charcoal or dark grey. If your suit is navy, wear navy. If your suit is mid-grey, wear mid-grey or a tonal heather grey.
Colour by suit
Navy suit
Navy is the most versatile suit colour and the easiest for socks. Navy, dark blue, mid-blue, and Henri Blue all work naturally. Burgundy and bordeaux are the classic contrast choice — a muted wine tone against navy reads as considered rather than loud. Forest green works with a brown or tan shoe. Avoid black — it creates the disconnected stripe problem described above.

Charcoal or dark grey suit
Charcoal is the most formal suit colour after black tie. The safest choice is a sock in the same charcoal or dark grey family. Mid-grey melange adds texture without colour. Burgundy and bordeaux are the classic contrast for formal grey. Navy works with a dark brown shoe.

Mid-grey or light grey suit

Length: always over the calf
For suit wear, the sock must reach above the calf. A sock that falls below the calf will slide down during the day and expose skin at the ankle when seated — the one visible failure mode that is impossible to ignore once noticed. Subtle patterns work for business formal. A tonal stripe — navy on navy, charcoal on charcoal — adds texture without breaking formality.
