What to Ask For at Christmas: Why "Just Socks" Belongs on Your Wish List

Short answer: If you don't know what to ask for this Christmas, ask for socks, and be specific about it. Name the line, the colours, the pack size and your shoe size, and send the link. It is the one wish that is cheap enough for anyone to grant, impossible to get wrong when you spell it out, and something you will actually wear every week of the year.

Every year, someone asks the question. Your partner, your mum, your brother, the colleague who drew your name. "What do you want for Christmas?" And every year, most of us give the worst possible answer: "Oh, I don't need anything."

That answer feels polite. It isn't. It hands the problem straight back to the person trying to be kind, and it is how you end up with another scented candle, a novelty mug or a gadget that lives in a drawer by February. A good wish list is a favour to the people who love you. And the best line you can put on it is the one in our campaign: Dear Santa, just socks.

Why "just socks" is the smartest thing to wish for

From the receiving end, socks solve every problem a wish list is meant to solve:

• It fits every budget. A single pair costs DKK 60–90, a three-pack DKK 160–270. Whoever is buying can say yes without thinking twice.
• You know exactly what you like. Colour, thickness, how high it sits on the leg. That is knowledge only you have, so it belongs on your list.
• You will never buy the good ones yourself. Almost nobody spends money on their own socks. A wish list is the one moment you can upgrade the whole drawer without feeling indulgent.

How to write socks on a wish list so you get the right ones

"Socks" on its own is how you end up with reindeer. The trick is to be precise enough that the buyer only has to click. Four details are all it takes:
