Sock Care Guide – How to Make Your Socks Last Longer

To keep your socks comfortable, durable, and looking new for as long as possible, follow these simple care tips.

1. Wash Socks Inside Out

Always turn socks inside out before washing. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, and skin particles while protecting the outer fabric and colors.

2. Wash at Low Temperature

Wash socks at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Lower temperatures protect cotton fibers and elastic threads, helping socks keep their shape and durability.

3. Wash Before First Wear

New socks should be washed before the first use. This removes production residues and allows the fibers to soften and settle naturally.

4. Avoid Tumble Drying

Whenever possible, air dry your socks. High heat from tumble dryers can weaken elastic fibers and shorten the lifespan of your socks.

5. Wash with Similar Colors

To maintain vibrant colors:

  • wash dark socks with dark clothing

  • wash white socks separately

  • wash bright colors with similar shades

6. Do Not Overload the Washing Machine

Avoid overloading your washing machine. Giving socks enough space reduces friction and prevents unnecessary fabric wear.

7. Store Socks Properly

Fold socks together instead of stretching them into tight balls. This helps preserve the elasticity and shape of the sock.

Relax Heavy Rib Supermelange — Red Wine / Forest Green / Pale Pink / Army / Off White

The warmest and most autumnal supermelange in the Relax range. Red Wine, Forest Green, Pale Pink, Army, and Off White are blended in a single yarn — producing a rich, complex earthy tone that reads as a warm heathered brown-red-green from a distance and reveals its five components up close. The sock for November boots, for the corduroy trouser, for the outfit that is built around texture and warmth. At 6–9 gauge and 93% organic combed cotton, it is chunky enough to fill a boot shaft and breathable enough to wear across the cooler months of the year. OEKO-TEX certified. Designed in Copenhagen.

Colour & Styling

Five tones pulled from opposite ends of the warm spectrum — and they work because each one earns its place. Red Wine is the deep wine-red anchor: cool enough to provide depth, warm enough to sit naturally with earthy greens and browns. Forest Green is a warm, deep earthy green that reinforces the earthy register. Army is the muted khaki-green that sits between the two greens and the red, binding the blend into a coherent earthy mid-tone. Pale Pink is the lift — present enough to prevent the blend from reading as simply dark and heavy, subtle enough not to disrupt the autumnal warmth. Off White is the breath — the tone that keeps the overall mix from closing in on itself.

The result from a distance: a rich, complex warm-toned heathered sock in the brown-red-green register. Up close: five distinct components visible in the knit, each contributing its own thread to the texture. In warm indoor light the red wine and forest green tones come forward; in cool outdoor light the army and off-white elements become more visible.

Best footwear:

  • Chelsea boots in tan, cognac, and dark brown suede and leather — the earthy red-green blend connects directly to warm leather — see boots guide →
  • Derby and chukka boots in tan suede — the autumn pairing; red wine and forest green above a warm suede cuff
  • Chunky sneakers (New Balance 990, Salomon XT-6, ASICS Gel-Kayano) — the heavy gauge suits more shoe volume; the warm supermelange reads as an earthy tonal anchor
  • Brown and tan leather penny and horsebit loafers — the earthy blend is the natural loafer accent in the autumn-winter wardrobe — see loafer guide →
  • White leather sneakers — the off-white element connects to the shoe; the warm supermelange reads as an earthy accent above — see sneaker guide →

Best trousers: Dark indigo denim · Olive and khaki chinos (tonal earthy connection with the army and forest green elements) · Camel and tobacco wool · Rust and terracotta cords · Brown corduroy — the quintessential pairing · Charcoal and dark grey flannel · Any trouser in the autumn palette where the sock reads as a deliberate earthy accent

How this differs from the other Relax supermelange colourways:
The Irr / Navy / Soft Charcoal / Pale Pink / Off White is cool and season-neutral — blues and grey. The Navy / Off White is the clean cool neutral. The Old Gold / Navy / Irr / Hot Chocolate / Off White is warm and complex with gold warmth. This Red Wine / Forest Green / Pale Pink / Army / Off White blend is the most emphatically warm and earthy — the deepest autumn tone in the collection, built specifically for the red-green-earth register.

What Is Supermelange?

Supermelange is a yarn construction technique where multiple fibres in different tones are blended together before spinning — producing a single yarn that carries all its component colours simultaneously. When knitted, this creates a heathered, tone-on-tone visual texture: the sock reads as one colour from a distance and reveals its five component tones up close and in changing light.

In this colourway: Red Wine provides the dark wine-red anchor; Forest Green adds deep earthy green depth; Army is the muted khaki-green that sits between them and binds the blend; Pale Pink introduces a subtle light warmth that lifts the mix and prevents it from reading as uniformly dark; Off White opens the whole blend and adds breath. Together they produce a tone in the warm brown-red-green register that no single solid colour could achieve — complex, textured, and visually interesting at every distance.

The Relax Construction

The Relax Heavy Rib (DS3800) is a fundamentally different sock from the rest of the Democratique range — different gauge, different weight, different occasion.

6–9 gauge chunky knit. Where the Fine Rib and Athletique Classique are both knitted at 200 needles (producing a fine, dense fabric), the Relax is knitted at 6–9 gauge — a much coarser construction that produces large, visible rib columns, significant fabric weight, and a genuinely chunky hand feel. This is the gauge of hand-knit-adjacent socks; the kind that fills a boot shaft and holds its position there.

93% organic combed cotton. The highest organic cotton content in the range — more cotton, less polyamide and elastane than either the Fine Rib (75%) or the Athletique Classique (82%). Despite the chunky gauge, the high cotton content breathes naturally, making the sock genuinely comfortable across the cooler months rather than only in peak winter.

The occasion. Fine Rib is for dress shoes and formal contexts. Athletique Classique is for sneakers and crew-sock casual. The Relax is for boots, for cold weather, for the considered casual outfit that takes autumn seriously.

FAQ

What is supermelange — how is this different from a plain heathered sock?

A standard heathered sock blends two or three yarn tones. Supermelange blends five — in this case Red Wine, Forest Green, Pale Pink, Army, and Off White — producing a much richer, more complex result that changes character in different light conditions. The sock reads as a single warm earthy tone from a distance; up close and in varying light, the five component colours become separately visible in the knit structure. The complexity is the point.

How does the Relax differ from the Fine Rib and Athletique Classique?

Completely different construction, weight, and occasion. The Fine Rib (DS1006) is a 200-needle thin dress sock for leather shoes and formal contexts. The Athletique Classique (DS1528) is a 200-needle heavier crew sock for sneakers and casual visible-sock dressing. The Relax Heavy Rib (DS3800) is a 6–9 gauge chunky sock — coarser, thicker, and heavier — built for boots and the relaxed end of casual dressing. The 93% organic cotton content keeps it breathable despite the weight.

Is "Red Wine" the same as Bordeaux in the Fine Rib range?

Similar colour family, different name and exact tone. Bordeaux in the Fine Rib solid range is a deep cool wine-red — formal, precise, used as a dress sock accent. Red Wine in the Relax supermelange is a component tone in a five-way blend, contributing its dark wine warmth to the overall mix rather than standing alone. The effect is different: Bordeaux reads as a single precise formal colour; Red Wine is one voice in a chord.

How does this differ from the other warm Relax supermelange — the Old Gold / Navy / Irr / Hot Chocolate / Off White?

Both are warm autumnal blends, but with different temperature profiles. The Old Gold / Navy / Irr / Hot Chocolate / Off White has gold as its dominant warm tone — producing a yellow-brown-blue earthy mix. This Red Wine / Forest Green / Pale Pink / Army / Off White blend has red-wine and forest green as its dominant tones — producing a darker, deeper, more emphatically red-green earthy mix. One is the gold autumn; this is the red-green autumn.

Can women wear these socks?

Yes — the Relax Heavy Rib is unisex. EU 41–46 fits most men and larger women's sizes. The pale pink element in this blend gives it a crossover quality that the warmer more masculine blends do not have.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — worldwide, with free shipping above 75€ / 75£ / 100 USD / 400 DKK. 99.2% of orders ship the same day. Full shipping information →
