Organic vs standard cotton

Standard cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in agriculture — accounting for a disproportionate share of global pesticide use relative to the land it occupies. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, under certification standards that cover soil health, water use, and farming practice.

For the consumer, the practical difference is in the fibre. Organic cotton retains more of its natural oils during processing, producing a softer, more consistent fibre. Combined with combing — a process that removes shorter fibres and surface fluff — the result is a longer, smoother, stronger fibre that produces a denser, more durable fabric at the 200-needle density Democratique uses.

Combed organic cotton

Combing is a secondary process applied after the raw cotton is cleaned. A fine-toothed comb removes the shorter fibres that would otherwise produce surface irregularity and pilling. What remains is a longer, more uniform fibre that knits more smoothly, dyes more evenly, and holds its shape better through washing. It costs more to produce than standard combed cotton — and significantly more than uncarded standard cotton. It is the reason Democratique socks feel and last the way they do.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is the most rigorous textile chemical-safety certification in Europe. It tests every component of the finished article — not just the cotton, but every dye, every thread, the elastic at the cuff, the finishing agents applied during production — for harmful substances including pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and pH levels. For socks worn against bare skin for ten or more hours a day, this matters more than most consumers realise.
