Sock Care Guide – How to Make Your Socks Last Longer
To keep your socks comfortable, durable, and looking new for as long as possible, follow these simple care tips.
1. Wash Socks Inside Out
Always turn socks inside out before washing. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, and skin particles while protecting the outer fabric and colors.
2. Wash at Low Temperature
Wash socks at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Lower temperatures protect cotton fibers and elastic threads, helping socks keep their shape and durability.
3. Wash Before First Wear
New socks should be washed before the first use. This removes production residues and allows the fibers to soften and settle naturally.
4. Avoid Tumble Drying
Whenever possible, air dry your socks. High heat from tumble dryers can weaken elastic fibers and shorten the lifespan of your socks.
5. Wash with Similar Colors
To maintain vibrant colors:
-
wash dark socks with dark clothing
-
wash white socks separately
-
wash bright colors with similar shades
6. Do Not Overload the Washing Machine
Avoid overloading your washing machine. Giving socks enough space reduces friction and prevents unnecessary fabric wear.
7. Store Socks Properly
Fold socks together instead of stretching them into tight balls. This helps preserve the elasticity and shape of the sock.

Originals Fine Rib Socks — Light Grey Melange
Grey is the most quietly capable colour in a sock wardrobe — and melange makes it better. Where a flat grey is plain, a melange weave mixes light and dark fibres into a heathered texture that catches the light and reads as considered rather than default. Works with black shoes, brown leather, white sneakers, and everything in between. The one colour that never asks anything of the outfit around it. Knitted since 2011 from OEKO-TEX certified organic combed cotton on 200-needle machines, with a hand-linked toe seam closed by hand. Designed in Copenhagen. Crafted in Istanbul.
Colour & Styling
Light grey melange is the most versatile colour in the Originals Fine Rib range — and arguably in any sock wardrobe. It is a true neutral that works across every shoe colour and every dress code without ever creating a wrong pairing. Unlike black or navy, which lean formal, grey sits comfortably in casual, smart casual, and business casual contexts equally — making it the strongest everyday sock colour of the range.
The melange construction is the key distinction from a plain grey sock. Melange yarn is spun from fibres of slightly different tones, creating a subtle visual texture — a quiet heathered quality that makes the sock more interesting up close and more refined at a distance than a flat single-colour grey. The 200-needle knit amplifies this: the tight stitch density shows the melange texture clearly without the fabric looking coarse.
For darker, more formal grey sock contexts — suits and business formal — see also navy or black. For a warmer earthy neutral, see army green.

FAQ
What is a melange sock and how is it different from a plain grey sock?
Melange yarn is spun from fibres of slightly different tones before being knitted — typically a mix of lighter and darker grey fibres — creating a heathered, textured appearance rather than a flat single-colour finish. The result is a sock that reads as visually more interesting and more refined than a plain grey, without any pattern or contrast. On 200-needle machines the melange effect is particularly well-defined: the tight stitch density shows the texture clearly while keeping the overall look subtle and elegant.
Is light grey melange more versatile than navy or black?
For everyday, casual, and smart casual use — yes. Grey is a true neutral that works across every shoe colour and trouser type without creating any wrong pairing. Navy and black are stronger in business formal and formal contexts. Grey is the most relaxed-capable of the three neutrals — the best choice if you want one pair that handles the widest possible range of outfits from weekend to office.
What shoes work best with light grey melange socks?
Light grey melange is the most shoe-agnostic colour in the range. It pairs cleanly with white sneakers, where the light tone creates a near-seamless transition from sock to shoe. It works with brown leather loafers and tan suede, where it bridges the warm-cool divide. With black shoes it creates a softer contrast than a black sock — more relaxed, less formal. In short: it works with everything, which is the point.
Is light grey melange suitable for business formal dress codes?
Light grey melange works well in business casual and smart casual settings. For strict business formal — dark suits, Oxford shoes, structured environments — the lighter tone is less conventional than navy or black and may read as too casual in very conservative contexts. For business casual, meetings, and modern offices it is entirely appropriate and often preferable for its relaxed versatility.
Are these socks organic and certified?
Yes. Made from 75% organic combed cotton, 23% polyamide, and 2% elastane. The cotton is certified organic, grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. The finished sock carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, confirming that every component — including the fibres used to create the melange effect — has been independently tested and verified free of harmful substances.
How does light grey melange differ from the other colours in the Fine Rib range?
Light grey melange is the only colour in the range with a heathered texture built into the yarn itself — all other colours are solid-dyed. It is also the lightest neutral, sitting between white and mid-grey. In terms of versatility it matches navy and black for everyday use but leans more casual. Army green is the closest alternative in terms of casual versatility, but with an earthy colour rather than a neutral.
Can I buy these as part of a multipack?
Yes — purchasing 10 or more products unlocks a 15% discount. Light grey melange pairs naturally with navy and black as the casual anchor of a neutral rotation. See all curated multipacks →
