Sock Care Guide – How to Make Your Socks Last Longer
To keep your socks comfortable, durable, and looking new for as long as possible, follow these simple care tips.
1. Wash Socks Inside Out
Always turn socks inside out before washing. This helps remove sweat, bacteria, and skin particles while protecting the outer fabric and colors.
2. Wash at Low Temperature
Wash socks at 30–40°C (86–104°F). Lower temperatures protect cotton fibers and elastic threads, helping socks keep their shape and durability.
3. Wash Before First Wear
New socks should be washed before the first use. This removes production residues and allows the fibers to soften and settle naturally.
4. Avoid Tumble Drying
Whenever possible, air dry your socks. High heat from tumble dryers can weaken elastic fibers and shorten the lifespan of your socks.
5. Wash with Similar Colors
To maintain vibrant colors:
-
wash dark socks with dark clothing
-
wash white socks separately
-
wash bright colors with similar shades
6. Do Not Overload the Washing Machine
Avoid overloading your washing machine. Giving socks enough space reduces friction and prevents unnecessary fabric wear.
7. Store Socks Properly
Fold socks together instead of stretching them into tight balls. This helps preserve the elasticity and shape of the sock.

Originals Fine Rib Socks — Navy
The most versatile sock in the range. Navy is the formal foundation — cool, contained, appropriate from a black-tie dinner to a Friday in trainers — and in the Fine Rib construction it is also the most precisely made. 200-needle thin-rib knit in 75% organic combed cotton, hand-linked toe, mid-calf length. The sock that disappears into a navy suit and reappears as a deliberate detail above a white sneaker. Photographed with Nike Air Force 1 and Clarks Wallabee. Both are correct. 60 DKK, OEKO-TEX certified. Designed in Copenhagen.
Colour & Styling
Navy is the only colour in the Fine Rib range that works across every formality level without adjustment. With a charcoal or navy suit and black Oxford shoes it reads as conservative and correct — the expected choice, executed precisely. With dark denim, a white shirt, and tan Wallabees it reads as considered and casual — the kind of sock that tells you the person wearing it has thought about their outfit without trying to announce it. With white leather sneakers it reads as a deliberate tonal choice: the dark navy above the white shoe, no colour story required.
This is the sock the rest of the wardrobe is built around. The other colours in the Fine Rib range are accents — greens, reds, pinks, blues — that all assume a foundation of navy and black already covered. Navy is that foundation.
Best footwear:
- Black Oxford and Derby — the formal default; navy reads as near-black in low light and precisely navy in direct light — see shoe guide →
- Brown and tan leather Oxford, Derby and loafer — navy and tan leather is the classic combination; cool-warm contrast that works across every outfit register — see loafer guide →
- Clarks Wallabee and suede loafers — the lifestyle shot; warm leather, navy sock, the combination that reads as effortless
- White leather sneakers (Nike Air Force 1, Adidas Stan Smith, Common Projects) — the other lifestyle shot; navy on white, clean and deliberate — see sneaker guide →
- Chelsea and chukka boots in tan, brown, and black suede — see boots guide →
Best trousers: Navy suit (tonal — the sock continues the trouser colour to the shoe) · Charcoal and dark grey flannel · Dark indigo denim · Black trousers · Camel and beige wool · White and cream chinos · Any trouser in any wardrobe context

The Fine Rib Construction
The Originals Fine Rib (DS1006) is Democratique's foundational dress sock. 200-needle knit — the highest needle count in the range — produces a fine, smooth, thin fabric with a consistent close-set rib texture that holds its shape precisely and fits inside a dress shoe without friction or bulk. The hand-linked toe seam is closed stitch-by-stitch rather than sewn over the top, leaving no ridge against the foot.
75% organic combed cotton — combed to remove short fibres before knitting, producing a smoother, more consistent yarn than standard carded cotton. 23% polyamide for durability and shape retention. 2% elastane for fit. Pre-washed and steamed; comfortable from the first wear.
This is the construction for dress shoes, leather shoes, and any context where the sock needs to be invisible inside the shoe and precise above it. For crew socks and visible above-the-shoe dressing, see the Athletique Classique →

FAQ
Is navy better than black for dress socks?
For most wardrobes, yes — navy is more versatile. Black dress socks read correctly with black shoes and very dark formal suits, but they can look heavy with brown leather, tan shoes, or the lighter end of the suit spectrum. Navy reads correctly with black shoes (the colour difference is minimal in low light), correctly with brown and tan leather (the cool-warm contrast is classic and deliberate), and correctly with navy suits (tonal continuity). The only context where black is definitively the better choice is a black-tie outfit or a black suit with black shoes — in every other formal or smart casual context, navy has the broader application.
How does this differ from the Fine Rib Black?
Same DS1006 construction, different colour register and application. The Fine Rib Black is the absolute neutral — the darkest possible solid, appropriate in any formal context, the correct choice with black shoes and black suits. Fine Rib Navy is the foundation colour with the broader wardrobe application — works with black shoes, brown shoes, navy suits, charcoal suits, denim, and everything in between. Most wardrobes need both; if you can only have one, navy covers more ground.
Is there a striped navy version?
Several, across different constructions. The Ultralight Stripes Navy / Off White is a 200-needle fine micro-stripe on the same thin dress-sock construction — formal-capable, understated. The Power Stripes Navy / Off White is a 168-needle wider stripe — more visible, smart casual. And the Athletique Classique Clean Stripes Navy is a heavier crew sock with a bold navy stripe band at the cuff — casual, sport-heritage.
How many pairs do I need?
The 12-pack Navy (600 DKK, saving 17% vs buying individually) is for those who have resolved the question. The 3-pack Navy / Forest Green / Black (180 DKK) is the starting position — the three colours that cover the full formal and smart casual wardrobe between them.
