About Democratique Socks

Democratique Socks was founded in Copenhagen in 2011 by Jacob Christiansen. The idea was simple: there was a gap in the market between cheap mass-market socks and conspicuously expensive luxury hosiery. A sock that was genuinely well-made — from the right materials, with the right construction — at a price that reflected its value rather than its branding. That gap has been Democratique's position for fourteen years.

The construction

Every sock in the Democratique range is built to the same four specifications regardless of style or colourway.

200-needle knitting. The needle count refers to how many needles are used in the knitting cylinder. A standard mass-market sock is knitted at 100–144 needles. Democratique knits at 200 — twice the density, producing a finer, smoother, more durable fabric.

Organic combed cotton. The cotton is certified organic and combed — a secondary process that removes shorter fibres from the raw cotton, leaving only the long, smooth, strong fibres. The result is a softer, more uniform, more durable yarn. 75% organic combed cotton, 23% polyamide for shape resilience, 2% elastane for fit memory.

Hand-linked toe seam. Each loop of the toe opening is placed individually onto a circular linking machine, stitch by stitch, producing a virtually flat seam with no ridge on the inside of the sock. The standard machine-looped alternative leaves a raised ridge across the top of the foot. Every Democratique sock is hand-linked as a baseline construction standard.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. Every component of the finished sock — the cotton, the dye, the elastic at the cuff, the finishing agents — is tested for harmful substances including pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and pH levels. Democratique has held this certification continuously across the full range since the early years of the brand.

The range

Three constructions cover every occasion. The Originals Fine Rib is the everyday sock — a 200-needle fine rib in a full palette of solid colours and stripes for dress shoes, loafers, and tailored trousers. The Athletique Classique is a heavier crew sock worn visibly above white sneakers and loafers in six Clean Stripes colourways. The Relax Collection is built for weekend and casual wear in heavy-rib supermelange blends.

The palette

The Democratique colour palette is one of the most considered in European sock design. Five permanent carryover colours form the foundation: Black, Navy, Army, Light Grey Melange, and Bordeaux. These are the colours that carry a man's wardrobe through every occasion without requiring a decision. Seasonal colours are introduced carefully and change slowly.

Sustainability

Democratique switched to 100% organic cotton across the entire range in 2020. Since June 2021, Democratique has planted a tree for every order placed at democratiquesocks.com, in partnership with Tree-Nation — trees planted in Nepal, Tanzania, and Madagascar. Production

Designed in Copenhagen. Crafted in Istanbul, at the same sock factory since 2011. The factory is one of the finest in the world for knitted hosiery — the same production partner used by established European premium sock brands. The factory holds its own OEKO-TEX certifications and operates under the quality standards Democratique has maintained since founding.
